Musgrave Must Go!

This woman is vile.  Colorado’s Congressional 4th District has an incredible opportunity this November to relieve Congress of this vile, bigoted woman.  To think of the civilian death count in Iraq now documented as between 90,000 to 150,000, the soldiers we’ve lost at over 4,000, and over 30,000 of our young men and women wounded, and this woman focuses on gay marriage?  This woman makes me sick.

If you aren’t familiar with Mrs. Marilyn Musgrave she is best known as the main sponsor of the Federal Marriage Amendment that thankfully failed miserably in 2006 and again in 2007.  As if those two failures weren’t enough she’s at it again co-sponsoring the same legislation this time around.  She’s known in the square state as "Mad Cow" Marilyn and desperately needs to be put out to pasture.

She has a fantastic opponent this year, Betsy Markey, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed and my wallet open in hopes that her bigotry and hatred are finally removed from our Capitol.

Focus on the Family Knows No Shame

This video is funded by Focus Action, the political arm of Focus on the Family.  Asking Christians to pray for rain during Barack Obama’s acceptance speech is not only childish, but it’s pretty disturbing. Why shut out free speech and the political process? Seems very unchristian. It has now disappeared from Focus’ site, but Keith Olbermann picked up on it and featured it on his show Countdown:

A Leap of Faith (or Two)

Now that my boss knows about it I guess it’s safe to publish on here.  I have decided to quit my job and return to school full time.  My first class is today at 1:00 PM.  I am attending Metropolitan State College of Denver where I will be majoring in Sociology with a minor in Political Science.  Eventually ending up with my Masters in Social Work and a career in Youth Suicide Prevention.  I’ll get more into my political aspirations in a future post.

The major leap of faith here is that I am looking at a significant cut in my income and standard of living.  I will be leaving my full time job as a retail Store Manager and going to school while working a part time job somewhere.  All the years I’ve spent out of school, I’ve continued to climb the ladder at my jobs and have now achieved a level of income that is not typical of a college student.  Along with that is an expensive car note, expensive rent, and various other expenses that I must now begin trimming away.

The other possible leap of faith is that I may not work a part time job at all until November 5th.  I am so extremely dedicated to the Barack Obama campaign here in Colorado and especially the work we are all doing in Arapahoe County that I have seriously considered going to school and spending the rest of my time working on the campaign.

Doing this would require me to live off of student loans for a few months, and so I have requested a slightly larger than normal private student loan to help cover me for the next couple of months.  The large majority of this loan will just be subsidizing my part time income as I go back to school.

My plan was pretty much set until I mentioned to a vendor that I work with indirectly that I was leaving my job.  She immediately implored me to apply for a part time position at her company for 25 hours week and essentially the same money I make now working 52 hours a week.  I have submitted my resume and seem to have a very good shot.

I’m very torn over my options now.  I had completely fallen in love with the idea of working full force for the campaign, and even scheduled my classes in such a way that I will only be in class Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon and Thursday evening.  The rest of my time would go to the Obama campaign.  This new job possibility would have me working Thursday evening, Friday evening and all day on Saturday and Sunday when I am most needed by the campaign.

The option of working a job with those kind of hours is outstanding and too good to pass up and so I’ve thrown my hat into the ring and will see how it all turns out.  If I get the job, I must take it and accept a reduced role in the campaign.

Currently I am one of my neighborhood leaders and a strong support to my local Field Organizer.  Losing me on weekends will be a very large blow to the organization that we are just now pulling together, but I really don’t see an alternative.  I mentioned this to her tonight and she was very sad to hear the news, but happy for my opportunities.  She’s passionate and intelligent and it’s a thrill working with her on something we both so strongly believe in

I’m very conflicted, but ultimately I have decided what I will do in either scenario.  If I am offered the job I will take it.  If I am not offered the job I will not pursue a job until November 5th, the day after we secure victory for Barack Obama and the values so many of us hold so dear.

Severely Injured Youth Tasered Up To 19 Times

From ky3.com:

BRANSON, Mo. — A teenager from Branson who was hit with an electric stun gun 19 times by police has recovered enough to do an interview with a reporter.

Ozark police found Mace Hutchinson on July 19 underneath the Highway F overpass over U.S. 65. Mace’s family says he broke his back in a fall off the bridge. When he wouldn’t move, police repeatedly used an electric stun gun on him.

Mace says he doesn’t remember much about that night and there are still several unanswered questions about how Mace ended up under the bridge. But what he is able to say is he believes there was no good reason why anyone in his situation would be stunned 19 times. He hopes the police officers are held accountable.

“There’s no way that they had to Tase me that many times,” he said.

Mace spent his 17th birthday lying in a hospital bed.

“I had a broken back, broken foot.”

Nearly two weeks later, he’s out of the hospital but still lying in bed, hardly able to move.

“It should be a couple months before I’m able to walk on my own.”

His family says what made his situation worse is that his surgery had to be postponed because he had been stunned by Ozark police 19 times.

“At least I’m alive though.”

Mace says he still can’t remember how he ended up at the bottom of the bridge. He says he knows he didn’t willingly jump.

“I know I’m lucky to survive that far of a fall.”

Police records say Hutchinson was aggressive with them, and tried to get up and get into traffic. Mace points out that he doesn’t weigh much and wonders why an officer didn’t just restrain him.

Police also say he yelled threatening remarks about harming officers. Those things combined were why they used the electric stun gun on him.

“He was saying things like, ‘Kill cops, shoot cops,’” Ozark Police Capt. Thomas Rousset said on July 23.

Mace says he doesn’t remember that and certainly doesn’t know how it would have been possible, with his injuries, for him to move toward the highway.

“There’s no way I could stand up. I had a broken back and a broken foot,” he said.

“I definitely want them to get punished, I don’t want them to get away with it.”

After the incident, the Ozark police chief said he launched an internal investigation. A reporter called the Ozark Police Department multiple times on Thursday but no one returned a call to provide an update on that investigation.

Am I the only one getting increasingly frustrated and concerned over these Tasing stories?  This kid had a BROKEN BACK and his heel was detached from the rest of his foot.  If the facts are as they appear to be, he was not possibly a threat!  He could have been saying, “I’m going to murder every single one of you.” and Tasing him 19 times would still not be appropriate.

Leaving the extremely serious injuries out of the story, he’s a small kid up against multiple police officers.  They keep saying he didn’t comply, what exactly was he not complying with?  To get up?  To stop being incoherent?  If these officers were not completely and totally incompetent they would have at the very least checked for injury.

The Captain angers me most of all.  “Shoot Cops. Kill Cops.”  Sounds fabricated, but even if it’s completely true were they really threatened by the kid sprawled out on the pavement mumbling to shoot cops?

This is simply disgusting.  Am I overreacting?  What do you think?

Update: Josiah Leming

In a previous post I talked about Josiah Leming and posted a video of him on the Ellen DeGeneres show.  Well, he has an album coming out in the fall and has been very successful in selling his music through his MySpace page.

Aside from chain smoking, things seem to be going very well for him.  Looking forward to his album, but I’m curious to know what you all think of him and his music?  I may just be(I know I am) a sucker for an underdog story.

Arapahoe County: Fired Up, Ready To Go!

This past Thursday evening I attended the Grand Opening of Barack Obama‘s Campaign for Change Campaign Office here in Arapahoe County.  There were well over 200 people in attendance, around 250 I would guess.  The crowd was as diverse a crowd as I’ve ever seen, and there was electricity in the air.  I met most of the staff, officially changed my registration to Democrat, and signed up to volunteer my time.

Saturday I attended a Volunteer Leaders conference which also had several hundred people in attendance.  We spent a little over 5 hours together training and organizing neighborhood teams with our campaign staff Field Organizers.  We will be meeting regularly to conduct voter registration drives, as well as phone banking.  I will probably end up as the Canvassing Coordinator or the Phone Banking Coordinator.  I have experience with both, so we’ll see.

These pictures are from the campaign office opening.  It was a fantastic evening!  Fired Up,  Ready To Go!

After Stroke, Lesbian Couple Refused Visitation

MIAMI, June 26 (UPI) — A Washington woman said she filed a federal lawsuit accusing a Miami hospital of “anti-gay animus” after workers refused to let her see her dying partner.

Janice Langbehn and her partner Lisa Marie Pond, both aged 39, intended to enjoy a vacation cruise with three of their four children, marking the women’s 18 years as a couple in February 2007, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Thursday.

The trip abruptly ended when Pond had a massive stroke as the ship was preparing to leave port, the newspaper said.

She was taken to Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, where Langbehn said workers would not let her see her ailing partner.

A social worker allegedly said the couple was in an “anti-gay city and state.”

Pond died about 18 hours after she arrived at Jackson’s Ryder Trauma Center.

Langbehn said she was permitted to see Pond for no more than about five minutes.

The suit, lodged in U.S. District Court in Miami, seeks at least $75,000 and accuses physicians Alois Zauner and Carlos Alberto Cruz and social worker Garnett Frederick of negligence and “intentional infliction of emotional distress.”
